Rheology refers to the deformation and flow properties of a substance under the action of external forces, mainly referring to the relationship

the appearance, construction performance and storage stability of coatings. Silica is an important rheological additive for coatings.
Different coating systems have different requirements for rheological additives. For oily systems, most rheological additives work by forming hydrogen
bonds. The surface of untreated silica contains a large number of hydroxyl groups.
They can easily form a uniform three-dimensional network structure through mutual hydrogen bonding in oily systems, which can increase the viscosity
of the coating. This three-dimensional network structure will be destroyed when subjected to mechanical shear force, causing the viscosity of the coating
to decrease and restore good fluidity; when the shear force is eliminated, the three-dimensional structure (hydrogen bond) will recover by itself and the viscosity
of the coating will increase.
This characteristic of silica gives oily coatings very good storage and construction properties. Especially for thick paste coatings (such as ship paint), it can
ensure good fluidity of the coating under certain construction shear force and ensure the thickness of the coating film in one construction.
During the construction process, due to the rapid evaporation of the solvent at the edge of the coating, the surface tension is uneven, which makes it easy
for the coating to move to the edge. The silica network can effectively prevent the movement of the coating and form a thick edge. At the same time, it can also
prevent the coating from sagging during the solidification process, making the coating uniform. At the same time, silica can increase the low and medium shear
viscosity of the coating due to the formation of hydrogen bonds, thereby playing a thickening role.
Currently, in the domestic coating market, silica has been widely used in the coating industry.
