What is matte coating?

Matte coating means the coating has low glossy. Its working principle is to create a micro grade rough surface on the 

coating when a beam of light is shining on the surface of coating. Then reflect the light from the coating's surface to 

everywhere to achieve the low glossy coating surface.

Glossy value means the coating's reflection ability. When the coating's reflection ability is stronger, the coating's glossy 

value is higher. And according to the coating's glossy value (measured by a 60° gloss meter),people are used to classify 

the light into three types. First is the bright light (its glossy value is higher than 60%), second is the matte light (its glossy 

value is higher than 10% but lower than 60%), third is the non light (its glossy value is lower than 10%). The coating with 

matte light can be used in leather coating, paper printing, printed ink, texture textile and package coating.Want an object to 

provide matte effect should it be treated with a rough surface. Then the roughness of the surface of the object should be 

greater than 1.1μm, with 60° gloss meter on the surface of the object  glossiness measurement, due to the incident angle 

of 60°, and the human eye can see the brightest light wave wavelength is 0.55um, according to the formula calculated particle 

depth h is 1.1μm.

Is silica a Matting Agent?

Yes ,silica dioxide can be used for making matting agent in coating. Our BP-100 Silica Matting Agent belongs to synthetic 

silica which is treated with a series production process. 

BP-100 silica matting agent has specific technical properties to decrease the glossy value of the coating but it will not effect 

the key parameters of coating system. Comparing with traditional silica matting agent, Quanxu BP-100 silica matting agent has 

excellent properties which can achieve the high matte surface result. It also has chemical durability, excellent transparency and 

amazing scratches resistance ability and resistance to metal labeling. Otherwise, Quanxu BP-100 silica matting agent is easier 

to disperse and provides less dusty comparing with other traditional silica matting agent.
