What is Matting Agent in coating?

Evenly adding pigment of filler into coating will form a rough surface of coating. The roughness is stronger and the glossiness

is lower when the particle size of pigment or filler is larger. Sometimes people use light calcium carbonate or talc powder to

produce flat coating. When the using quantity of light calcium carbonate or talc powder is too much,it will make the physical 

properties of the film become worse. Using silica matting agent in ink can avoid situation of stratified and hard precipitated. 

Normal silica matting agent are classified into two types, one is organic type and the other is iroganic type. The main iroganic 

type silica matting agent is white carbon black matting agent and it is mainly made of silicon dioxide.

Natural silica dioxide is ground by quartz powder which has lots of impurities. And its main material is silicon dioxide and this 

can not be called as white carbon black powder and it has not matte property. Natural silica dioxide can be used as filler in 

coating.Then what compenents that are used in coating as agent? Synthetic silica is the main material of white carbon black 

powder.

How can silica dioxide works as matting agent?

We should classify that the different situations of coating with silica dioxide or without silica dioxide.

* Coating without silica matting agent - the coating without silica matting agent performs like mirror state. When a beam of light 

is arriving to the coating, some light will be absorbed and the other light will be reflected. The reflection on the surface of coating 

will perform a glossy appearance.

* Coating with silica matting agent - when a coating has silica matting agent in it. The silica matting agent will be dispersed evenly 

to form a little rough surface. When a beam of light is arriving to the uneven film surface, diffuse reflection will happen.

This means that it can create a matte appearance that caused by diffuse reflection. Using silica matting agent with high porosity, 

optimal particle size distribution and suitable surface treatment can arrive excellent matte effect.
